Possible Duplicate Post, How to reserve an answer?
It's the fastest gun in the west problem. There's an MSO post about it where someone puts up a slapdash answer to be first, then goes back and edits it with details, so they're still first.

I'm probably going to get skewered for this -- You can be rude and still provide a perfectly...
I often get viewed as being curt, abrupt, or a touch to the rude side.

Why is there a badge for down voting?
Agree 100% with @muru. The only thing I'ld add is that downvoting is arguably even MORE important than upvoting in the answer sorting process. There's also a badge for retracting a negatively receiv …

Moderators are *not* the Software Police! (Read for details!)
I certainly do not disagree with @Oli or the OP, but I just thought I'ld put a bit of my logic out there:
Yep. If it's about movie piracy, I'm certainly not responding to the question. That's not t …

"Weighted" reputation gains
I gave the question an uptick, but I'm in the high rep use boat. I don't downvote though.

What should I (or we) do about answers that obviously miss the point of the question entirely?

What to do when you get a comment "for OSX just do this..."?
The example is here
I know in the interest of being friendly, you just let it ride. However, do we need to think about the policy of "this was the top google hit, so I posted something relevant as a …

Failed audit - did the system choose poorly?
That answer could be reduced in characters to "This blows".
So, it doesn't propose a solution. It doesn't point to a "We're working on it" thread. Etc etc.
If it was refined to "This blows", would …

How far an explanation should go / does it legitimate double posts / answers?
While yours wasn't a link only answer, the more checkbox style answers will tend to get votes/accepts.
If you rifle through some of my low-vote answers, I'm sure you'll find the same thing all over …

Is it OK to send a message to a spammer to not advertise?
I know it's policy not to edit spam questions. I would think posting that sort of an answer would just be egging them on and wasting your time. It's probably posted by a script and not a human anywa …

Correcting an answerer
Just disagree in one comment and let them flame. Don't argue. They'll tire out, and someone will flag the comments for deletion.
