Thank you for the kind offer. However, as stated in other comments here, the command xz --version has been issued on compromised systems and it seems to report correctly the vulnerable version number. Therefore it is a useful way to find out, that you are affected, if you are and it is - as far as anyone can tell - a harmless command on non affected systems. If my post post was undeleted, you could post your arguments for using a different approach as a comment and you're invited to do so. I don't admit, that my advice is dangerous.

I am wondering if you would be happy to update your answer, removing the contested command: xv --version and replacing with either or both of the commands that terdon and BeastOfCaerbannog have suggested? If you can do this there would be no need for the answer to remain deleted; I would be happy to expedite this...
