@user806724 On Saturday 17th, the whole Stack Exchange service was under maintenance (updates etc.) for 1 hour. It was said that every site would be marked as "read-only". That's why you had this problem.
1) It's a question involving old stuff. I want to write about Ubuntu history. 2) By saying "old releases ... 4.10 Warthy - 16.10 Yakkety", I exclude the still supported ones (14.04 Trusty & 16.04 Xenial). Just 14.10, 15.04, 15.10 & 16.10 "got into the way" and I had to extend the timeline to 16.10 (and unfortunately including Trusty & Xenial).
@terdon The question would be more like a discussion one, about "honouring" all the features and capabilities of old/past Ubuntu versions (e.g. 11.04 Natty - first Ubuntu ver with Unity)
