Reopen this question
I know there a long standing dislike of RTFM and google here, but I am afraid we will have to agree to disagree on this point . google is a useful tool and the "teach a man to fish", IMHO, applies. Sometimes , it is best to guide people how to RTFM, man pages, ubuntu documentation, duplicate questions here, and yes sometimes even google. Teaching people how to self help / self learn is very helpful . In this case, I left a comment on a closed question, best I could do at the time. Now that the question is re-opened, I have given additional advice and asked for additional information.

I think close g as a duplicate is preferable and some of the comments might appear snarky. How would you feel if you made a mistake and were asking for help and got similar comments ?

How can I filter discussions to newer instead of from years in the past?
Just because a Q/A is from 2012 or even earlier does not mean it is out of date. Many aspects of configuration files in Ubuntu have been the same since 2004

Wrong duplicate
@Melebius no, it is fine, I was just bringing a new development to everyone's attention in the midst of a new problem with kernels. I think now at least we know where to send people for support and that is the point. Thanks for looking.

What is this ridiculous "reputation" system?
I agree, it is a bit frustrating at first, but on such a busy active site it is one defense against spam and it goes fairly fast if you are active.

Thank You Everyone
I am sorry you had a bad experience, but, marking questions as duplicate serves the exact purpose you are requesting. If your question is being marked as a duplicate, update the question to reflect you have read the duplicate and clarify what part you do not understand. Duplicate questions and marking should allow us to quality control and improve answers. This sort of discussion , IMO, belongs on meta
