Don't mix version specific tags with stuff that isn't version specific!

I have anticipated two possible concerns: Why not add tags instead? … I don't think anyone wants questions that apply to three releases to have version tags, but even if we did generally do that, we couldn't here. …

Can we increase the minimum reputation requirement for creating new tags?

Experienced users can change the bad tags to good tags, given the information provided by the bad tags. Of course there are exceptions to this; some tags are so bad they don't facilitate this. … Sometimes posts are tagged redundantly, with some just-right tags, and some newly created tags that are far too specific, or which really mean the same thing as the just-right tags. …

Tags are only synonymized once they exist. Tags are created by a question being tagged with it (either originally, or in an edit). A tag is never created without a question. … Users with 300 or higher reputation can create new tags. There are many such users, but this tag has never been created (at least not yet). That suggests we may not need it. …

Why is there a Custom Distributions tag?

The problem with that (now deleted) question wasn't mainly that it was off-topic (which it was), but that: It was spam, or pretty close. It wasn't a question at all, so much as a call for discussion …

Do we need separate version specific DE and flavour tags?

Merging Desktop Environment Tags with Ubuntu "Flavor" Tags As for merging lubuntu and lxde, or xubuntu and xfce, or kde and kubuntu, I'm not as sure this would work out well. … So if these are to be merged, I think the tags denoting the Ubuntu flavor's name (lubuntu, xubuntu, kubuntu) should be the master tags. …
