Once you get to a high enough reputation (>10k) you see this: Even though there's a large number of questions in the close review queue (~900), they are not counted in this number. … Earlier, I'd see smallish numbers in there, knowing quickly enough if something changed - so I'd be on hand to review low-quality, suggested-edits, etc. …
