Style guide for questions and answers
I am glad you still included a comprehensive discussion of responses using the command line rather than focus on just the GUI which is where I imagined this question and answers were headed after the OP mentioned "responses are understood by all audiences, not just the most technical among us". There remains a big role for the command line in Ubuntu and I regard that as a good thing, hence my +1.

Are we better off with a general "Unix & Linux" stackexchange site?
@MarcoCeppi I know that. I am still hoping that in a fit of madness the gurus of StackExchange may surprise us and roll AskUbuntu into Unix/Linus Stackexchange. Unlikely but hope springs eternal!

Are we better off with a general "Unix & Linux" stackexchange site?
As I commented on another answer, keeping AskUbuntu as a separate island from the greater Unix/Linux/GNU universe is misguided and ultimately counterproductive.

What should we do to celebrate 100k questions?
@Tachyons Ubuntu is a GNU/Linux distro and is my distro of choice most of the time. I am typing this in Firefox running on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring beta running as the only OS on my Laptop. I am not against Ubuntu but do believe that the Ubuntu community would be stronger if it interacts more, not less, with the greater UNIX/GNU/Linux community. Witness the strength of the Stackoverflow community which gains strength rather than weakness from it's diversity. Stackoverflow has not splintered into C, Fortran and Visual C++ sub-fora but is richer for it's diversity.
