@Timothy Sometimes the approver decides to improve the edit. This case the approver will be shown. He can also decide was the edit helpful or not – so you will gain rep if your edit was helpful.

The general rule is to achieve some reputation then sacrifice it. To achieve it, you should answer some questions. The more answers you write the more rep will you have. And after you will achieve 200, you will get +100 association bonus.

You can just delete your downvoted answer and will get reputation back after a short time delay.

I just flag such answers for being not answers and only comments. Also, talking to newbies and advising them to wait gives me some extra points.
