No, sorry, you're completely wrong here. You can downvote me as much as you like, but until you start to understand this, you're going to keep running into me, the other mods and other users. That's going to become unsustainable very fast.
Why would you think there is (or should be) some sort of restriction between individual tags? Apt is broad? So What? That's the point of adding other tags. It's the relation between the tags on a question describes the content and in doing that tells somebody what a question is about in just a few words. The other way around, if I have Apt issues specifically on 14.04, I'm going to tag it: apt 14.04
Sidebar: This answer originally really wasn't about version tags (you and I have danced that number so many times now). My question isn't some willy-nilly "just because I'm on 14.04" approach. It's specific to 14.04. That's why it's tagged as such. I honestly don't know what will happen in the future but again, as this is something new to 14.04 and 14.04 will be around for a while, a version tag seems like it'll be applicable indefinitely.
When you apply multiple tags, consider that they could be limiting each other... Lke lozenges in a Venn diagram. By making them overlap you set boundaries and quickly tell people what the question is about.
I'm fairly certain this meta question is about a recent question of mine. It's represented here by the very centre of the Venn diagram in the three-way overlap.
And just by looking at the tags, somebody instantly knows it's about Apt and Bash in 14.04. Job done.
You're a very literal guy so before you dig through my questions and accuse me of blatant hypocrisy, I thought it worth pointing out that tags sometimes also need to be used additively when multiple disparate topics are covered.
