A better idea might be to use a browser extension or applet built with the Stack Exchange API. For example, here's [one for Chrome][1], and [another one][2] for Firefox, Chrome and Opera, that does exactly what you want, and more. Find more of these apps on [Stack Apps][3].

You can also try following the [Ask Ubuntu twitter feed][4] or the [RSS feed][5]. In short, there are so many ways to be informed of new questions, there really isn't a need to build something like this into the site itself.
