What to do when there are to different questions but they can be solved with the same answer (such as what is 3 + 1 and what is 2 + 2, both will equal 4)?

Look at this question:

Icons from my Home Directory in 23.10

Now observe this one:

All folders visible in desktop linux

I have answered the first question and was about to answer the second but caught myself on the thought that I was basically saying the same thing as in the first answer.

What do we do in this case? The questions are not duplicates but can be solved in the same way. Would we still flag one of the posts as duplicate of the other (because the solutions are are the same)?

Recently an election took place on Stack Overflow.

When is the next moderator election on Ask Ubuntu scheduled?

What are the intervals between elections?

Where and when can I participate in the election (as a candidate)?

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204766How to bring more attention to a non-duplicateJohn Carterhttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/17496342024-03-11T18:41:37Z2024-03-15T16:11:54Z

My question on Ask Ubuntu was flagged as duplicate. The post that was said to be my dupe did not apply to my circumstances, so I edited my question and voted for its reopening.

How many votes do I have to get so my answer would be reopened?

Are there any other alternative ways to reopen questions?

Are there any ways I can bring more attention to a question other than bounties?

It is not that I am going to perish as a result of my question not being answered on AskUbuntu, but it would help a lot.

We have a language-support tag which has the following guidance:

Questions related to the language support provided by Ubuntu.

We also have a language tag which has the following guidance:

Questions that relate to the use of different languages in Ubuntu

It is obvious that the tags are similar in scope, identical I might say.

I think that we don't need both and I suggest that we make the language-support tag a synonym of language.

We can edit questions, even after a while.

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204712About a post in AskUbuntu that received a downvoteFreehttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/7296042024-03-04T11:54:00Z2024-03-04T13:04:05Z

Yesterday I posted in Ask Ubuntu a question about
dnsmasq
, and it was a large post with all important details, what I have tried already, the error messages, and it became really long - more than I usually see in Ask Ubuntu.

Today, some minutes ago, I deleted the first post and did a new one, a lot more summarized, because I think it is better like that: dnsmasq configuration for TFTP + ProxyDHCP in Ubuntu Server 22.04.3 LTS

Some minutes later, I received a downvote and I don't know why.

Can anybody tell me what is wrong in that new post?

I've somehow fried my pc trying to install ubuntu and have a lot to write to describe symptoms, etc. Is this where people do that kind of thing or is there somewhere less official where people go for more complex questions?

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/2046441Goodbye Gunnar Hjalmarsson 1958.10.06 - 2023.12.20andrew.46https://meta.askubuntu.com/users/575762024-02-23T09:31:29Z2024-03-09T05:33:00Z

The Ask Ubuntu Community has lost a long time contributor from its ranks of esteemed contributors with the recent death of Gunnar Hjalmarsson. Gunnar was a highly valued contributor to Ask Ubuntu for 10 years and 9 months.

His profile tells us that on Ask Ubuntu he reached 4.4m people, crafted 1,061 answers and asked 3 questions. It saddens me that we do not know that much more about Gunnar, although his Ubuntu Wiki fills in a few gaps perhaps.

I would welcome those who perhaps know Gunnar better to post answers or comments to this post so that we can all then better appreciate the man and his work beyond the bare details given here.

Our thoughts and condolences to the family of Gunnar Hjalmarsson...

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204622If I have useful information to add to an answer, why do I need reputation to post it and how do I get it?Chris Legerhttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/17685532024-02-18T23:19:48Z2024-02-19T14:45:32Z

I was able to figure out some useful details to a question that was asked about the .epub format...but when I wanted to share what I found (which was not in the answers), I can't because of the reputation system.

I guess I'll just get on with my life instead of spending time increasing my reputation points, but is that really the best way to prevent spam on a site?

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204542How to see the user's reputation graph?stumblebeehttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/7670562024-02-03T02:37:56Z2024-02-04T21:00:56Z

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204489Do 'Read the man pages...' type comments and answers have a place on Ask Ubuntu?andrew.46https://meta.askubuntu.com/users/575762024-01-25T06:00:26Z2024-01-30T06:18:09Z

In consultation with the Ask Ubuntu Community I would like to have some discussion and ideally a firm policy on how we should deal with Answers or Comments that invite people to find their own answers in the man pages of the relevant application.

An example, drawn from Ask Ubuntu, is this comment which gives some hints about a script problem and then a requirement to read a man page:

Wrap your
autofix
command in a bash script, and call that script from your
for
loop. In the scrip you can control
autofix
's outputs, check it's exit status, trap segfaults, etc. Read man bash.

Are such hints to read even sections of a 5,223 page man page useful for the type of user most usually found on Ask Ubuntu? Please give your thoughts below and help us to formulate a policy for dealing effectively and kindly with this matter...

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/20444112023: a year in moderationJNathttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/3068232024-01-24T16:40:52Z2024-01-24T18:42:53Z

It’s that time of the year again! As we wave goodbye to last year and welcome the new one, we have a tradition of sharing moderation stats for the preceding calendar year.

As most of you here might be aware, sites on the Stack Exchange network are moderated somewhat differently to other sites on the web:

We designed the Stack Exchange network engine to be mostly self-regulating, in that we amortize the overall moderation cost of the system across thousands of teeny-tiny slices of effort contributed by regular, everyday users.
-- A Theory of Moderation

That doesn't eliminate the need for having moderators altogether, but it does mean that the bulk of moderation work is carried out by regular folks — folks like you. Every bit of time and effort y'all contribute to the site gives you access to more privileges you can use to help in this effort, all of which produce a cumulative effect that makes a big difference in ensuring Stack Exchange sites remain a valuable source of high-quality content on the web.

So as we say goodbye to 2023 (and January 2024… ahem) and move into 2024, let us look back at what we accomplished as a community... by looking at some exciting stats.
¹ This refers to the automated systems otherwise known as user #-1.

² This refers to the membership of Ask Ubuntu without diamonds next to their names.

³ The system will suspend users under three circumstances: when a user is recreated after being previously suspended, when a user is recreated after being destroyed for spam or abuse, and when a network-wide suspension is in effect on an account.

⁴ A "destroyed" user is deleted along with all that they had posted: questions, answers, comments. Generally used as an expedient way of getting rid of spam.

⁵ This counts every review that was submitted (not skipped) - so the 2 suggested edits reviews needed to approve an edit would count as 2, the goal being to indicate the frequency of moderation actions. This also applies to flags, etc.

⁶ Includes close flags (but not close or reopen votes). The community² can handle these flags by at least one person voting to close a question that has a close flag.

⁷ This ignores numerous deletions that happen automatically in response to some other action.

⁸ This includes comments deleted by their own authors (which also account for some number of handled comment flags).

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204420Add option to close vote because it is an XY problem?Archisman Panigrahihttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/1244662024-01-24T10:41:41Z2024-02-03T12:34:05Z

I recently saw a question where the user asked where to buy "Samsung Magician software" for GNU/Linux. A quick google search shows that it is a software for health checkup and performance optimization of Samsung SSDs.

Clearly this is not directly fall into "not an official Ubuntu flavor" (because this is actually about drive optimazation in Ubuntu) or "bug reports about Ubuntu" or something like that.

However, it seems that the user wants to fix a problem (drive optimization == X) using Ubuntu, but they want to use a non-existing solution (samsung magician software == Y), and asked a question about Y. This is another example of the XY Problem.

We regularly get many similar questions, which don't directly fall into existing categories for closure.

Shall we create a separate closure category for XY problems?

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204404Has policy on downvotes changed?zwetshttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/1344792024-01-21T20:20:44Z2024-01-21T20:23:57Z

I have been an on-and-off user of AskUbuntu for 10 years. Coming back this year I notice that the majority of questions on the front page have a -1, often already within the hour after they are asked.

In my recollection this wasn't the case before. Downvoting wasn't something to do lightly, and when you did there would occasionaly be a (moderator) comment "if you downvote, please explain why you did so".

This seems to be different now. I just counted, and of the top 20 questions 4 have a 0 score. 16 have -1 or less.

I can't disagree with the -1s. Questions are worse than they were 10 years ago, when measured against AU policy and the "how to ask a good question" guidelines. Many are little more than "X doesn't work, please help" and deserve a downvote.

I suppose this is the "eternal September" of Ubuntu (yes, I'm old enough to have lived through Usenet's eternal September) and I can only be happy for the many people discovering it. But it's been a bit of a bummer for AU.

Anyway, my question is: has policy on downvoting changed and/or is it OK to downvote a bad question without leaving a comment?

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204387Why does the site attack people seeking help?Liberatedhttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/8325702024-01-11T15:36:31Z2024-02-27T18:09:37Z

I have technical problems i can't solve, and instead of providing help, I've been attacked. People complain that they don't like my questions, they troll all my content to down vote it, and now I've been told i can't ask anymore questions, due to people not liking me. Is this site here to help people with ubuntu issues, or is it just here for people to stroke their own egos, by pushing around people without as good of computer skills as them? I assume I'll be banned just for asking this, based on previous community interactions.

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/204351Why can't I login into Ask Ubuntu with launchpad anymore?Hadmut Danischhttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/17586262024-01-07T20:12:47Z2024-01-07T23:40:33Z

I do have an Ubuntu Launchpad account (still works, e.g. for reporting bugs, etc.) and I used to use it to login into Ask Ubuntu as well.

For some months now, I can't login into Ask Ubuntu anymore. After authorizing to launchpad, which still works, password OK, and choosing the access level, I do get an error message from Ask Ubuntu that login failed.

The Ubuntu customer service could not help, they don't even understand the problem.

I'm logged in here with my Google Account instead of Launchpad right now, but the question remains: Is there anyone in charge and able to fix this?

Compliciation: I do know that this question belongs to meta.askubuntu.com, but this site requires me to have 5 or more reputation points, which I do not have with this workaround google account. So one is never able to ask on meta.askubuntu.com, why authentication on askubuntu.com wouldn't work, since this requirement breaks itself by design.

I was browsing around since I just added TPM to my older motherboard and I wanted to check the full version. While browsing I stumbled across https://askubuntu.com/a/1415651/231142 where it is deleted. While they marked it as from SuSE Linux, the answer is exactly the same for Ubuntu.

Running that answer for my Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, I get this output.

$ cat /sys/class/tpm/tpm0/device/firmware_node/description
TPM 1.2 Device

Which seems very valid to me.

My question then would be do we leave this answer deleted even though it is a valid answer but mentions SuSE Linux?

Some time ago I found an answer which I had found useful and upvoted.

Recently I bumped into the same issue again and, trying to apply the steps from the answer, I found that the solution is now deprecated, as pointed out in a comment (which I upvoted).

After some searching I found an answer on StackOverflow that is up-to date and working for me, so I upvoted that as well.

Now what to do about the original answer?

I tried removing my upvote, but it says it's locked (see here for an explanation).

The comment is over a year old, so I'm assuming the original author didn't know what to do about it or doesn't care to update the answer.

I could add another comment, pointing to the newer answer I found.

I could edit the answer but that doesn't feel right since it's not mine. Options are

adding an obvious warning at the top, potentially including a link to the new answer,

updating it to show the new solution or

both.

I could flag the answer, but that doesn't seem right to me either.

What is one supposed to do in such a case?

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/2040325Notifying users about the policy on AU concerning AI-generated contentandrew.46https://meta.askubuntu.com/users/575762023-11-08T02:46:25Z2024-02-23T09:39:05Z

We have an opportunity to increase awareness of the Ask Ubuntu prohibition on AI-generated content. Currently we have only two active notification areas:

AI-generated content is not permitted on Ask Ubuntu: This is the policy itself which sits in Meta and will usually have a 'featured' tag affixed to bring a link to the main AU page.

Welcome to Ask Ubuntu: The 'Tour' page contains a link to the AI policy; in theory all users take the Tour but experience suggests that most do not.

It is a little scanty and there have been some users claiming ignorance of our AI prohibition when approached by Moderators about such content in their answers.

As a result of the consensus reached in the recent Moderation Strike there is another option that we can now bring in to play. This will entail a warning that will show to users pasting in content to the Answer box, notifying the user about the prohibition on AI-generated content. This could not be missed or overlooked.

On Stack Overflow this will look something like the following 'first concept' image:

My proposal is that we opt in and take this option with the obvious change of 'Stack Overflow' to 'Ask Ubuntu' and a link to our own policy, or to a new 'Help' page in the 'Learn More' link. But the beginning of this process, as with most larger changes, is consultation with the community, and here we are...

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/2038710Can we fix this tag or should we just [uninstall]?Zannahttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/5277642023-10-14T16:17:25Z2024-03-13T09:23:15Z

It's been asked about before and asked about again but it seems like the large uninstall tag is still a bit of a miscellany, with the majority of questions in it being about uninstalling software, while we have another software-uninstall tag.

What should we do with these tags?

Should we merge software-uninstall into uninstall and clean it up?

Or should we merge uninstall into software-uninstall, creating other tags such as system-uninstall as/if needed?

Or should we get rid of both of them? Are there any experts on uninstalling stuff? Anyone interested in following these tags? Could the tasks of uninstalling currently gathered loosely in uninstall be considered to be better covered by other tags such as package-management, software-installation, apt, system-installation, dual-boot, etc?

Or should we do something else entirely? :)

As of February 2 2023, there is a ban on the use of AI-generated content on Ask Ubuntu.

This ban involves:

Deletion of all AI-generated content, whether acknowledged as such or not

Moderator warning email for initial occurrence

The usual escalation of penalties for further infractions

Grammar and Spell Checking Tools: Note that it is the moderator team's opinion that the use of Grammarly and spell checking tools to correct grammar errors and spelling errors is not AI-generated content. Using those tools to improve your own written posts' grammar or to correct spelling errors is not forbidden; however, we are specifically barring the use of ChatGPT and other AIs as the sole source of generating answer content.

Timeline:

Community Consultation: On December 19th 2022, Community discussion commenced on AU Meta concerning our position on AI-generated content. This discussion attracted considerable Community interest and involvement.

Temporary Ban: On January 5th 2023, while Community discussion was taking place, there was a considerable upsurge in the number of of AI-generated answers and spam messages posted on Ask Ubuntu. To get control of this upsurge of incorrect, nonworking, and unvetted content in answers, a temporary ban on AI-generated answers was instituted. This ban continued until February 2, 2023, when a permanent ban was instituted.

SE Enforcement Guidelines: On May 29 2023 SE issued a set of enforcement guidelines which prohibited most of the Ask Ubuntu interventions related to AI-generated content. This action, along with several other factors, lead to the general strike by Moderators and curators of SE.

Strike Resolution and new Policy: On August 6th 2023, with the strike resolved, a new AI Policy was jointly created by SE staff and Moderators.

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/1983818Improving question closed banners for most users - short wording needed for site specific reasonsZannahttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/5277642021-12-02T09:13:15Z2024-01-31T16:57:07Z

So, not very long ago a change was made to the format of the banner that appears at the top of closed questions. It no longer shows who closed the post (I disapprove of this change, but this post here is not about that) and it no longer shows a detailed description of the reason for closure, except to the OP and to users with the close vote privilege, which is a small minority of all visitors to the site.

Here are some examples:

This is what a question closed as "no-repro" looks like to the author of the question:

Here's what a question closed as "not about Ubuntu" looks like to high rep users:

And here's what that question looks like in an incognito/private browsing session (i.e. to the vast majority of users):

The text explaining the reason for the closure is missing. There's currently no way for this text to be displayed to everyone.

Personally, I think this is bad, because people who don't have the close voting privilege should still be able to understand why questions are being closed. This will be particularly helpful to keen new users who want to learn how to do moderation tasks, and to visitors thinking of posting questions.

In the future, this might change, but for now, we can make at least a small improvement. You'll notice that there is a part of the close notice that is shown to everyone:

At the moment, this is the same for all of our site-specific close reasons. It just says the question is off topic.

The point of this post (if you're still reading, thanks :) ) is to propose short versions of each of the reasons to be used instead of that generic text, so that everyone can at least get some idea of why the question was closed.

I propose that the short version of close reason #1:

This is not about an official Ubuntu flavor. This question is specific to a release of Ubuntu which has reached its end of standard support or end of life date, and is not related to asking for help to upgrade to a supported release. https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/1582631Is the Ask Ubuntu community generally more friendly than Stack Overflow - If so, why?user3728501https://meta.askubuntu.com/users/1219692016-07-31T01:26:55Z2024-02-25T21:39:43Z

This is not a rant! These are my initial thoughts in a discussion which I'm hoping other people will want to engage with. I want to hear your opinions on the following questions which I put to you.

I have been using Stack Overflow and Ask Ubuntu on and off for a few years now. I used to use Stack Overflow much more regularly, but then I experienced a phase of unpleasant exchanges and decided I would try and avoid the site in future if possible.

This hasn't worked out all that well for me, as now when I use it I tend to ask more awkward questions because I can't find the solution myself - this tends to lead to arguments or confrontation regardless of how one phrases a question because the so community seems to have a high percentage of users who react badly to awkward questions. (Keep in mind this is just my personal experience over a few years. You might think differently and not agree.)

Perhaps this is a controversial statement? Call it trolling or just offhand or perhaps confusing and unconstructive comments if you will, but my personal feelings are that I will be treated much more politely on ask Ubuntu than stack overflow.

Why do I compare these two sites? Mainly because I haven't used the others that much. I feel as if I have enough experience of both to make the comparison.

What is the cause of this? Are Ubuntu users more harmonious as their operating system of choice is less likely to cause outbursts of rage than other operating systems? Is it that ask Ubuntu is just geared towards being noob friendly and so we are more patient here? Or is something else going on?

I want to know about other peoples experiences of other Stack Exchange sites. Is this pattern repeated elsewhere? Do you agree with my feeling that stack overflow can be hostile at times or have you never experienced this yourself? I guess its possible that it's just me, or my interpretation of the users there, or that I've just been unlucky, but I dont think this is the case.

Finally, is there anything that can be done? Should we even try to do something? Perhaps it would be better to do nothing because there isn't enough of a problem here to worry about or because it isn't morally right to try and influence other users behavior? What do you think about these points? When moving a discussion to chat, a pop-up appears reminding users to be polite - so there is already a system in place, perhaps due to past problems.

Perhaps sometimes cultural differences come into play also. It would seem difficult or impossible to homogenize the cultural expectations of a global user community.

Why do I ask on Meta here and not Stack Overflow? The reason is simply that I think here this question will produce less negativity than on Meta Stack Overflow. I suspect putting it here, although obtaining less responses, is less likely to descend into chaos. (But let's see what happens, I could be wrong on this too.)

I don't exactly know why this is the case anyway, but I have quite often seen new questions with the above title ('What's your Ubuntu question? Be specific') as the person asking the question cannot be bothered to add one (or didn't notice). This very annoying as it makes it more difficult for other people to find it if they need it. The recent example that sparked this is here. There is another here - I can't find other examples, presumably as the community here is wary enough to spot em and edit it in for the OP.

Could a thing be added that if the title is still empty, or contains
What's your Ubuntu question? Be specific
, it then flags it up the OP (a similar method to this:)

https://meta.askubuntu.com/q/86847Am I penalized for trying to "improve" a test edit?Amandahttps://meta.askubuntu.com/users/130492014-03-08T21:56:27Z2023-12-20T18:51:59Z

I got a suggested edit that seemed really weird:

https://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/232686

I couldn't quite figure out what the edit was trying to achieve, and toggling between "markdown" and "rendered output" didn't make it more clear so I looked at the original question which was kind of thin but actually had a good answer, and wanted to see the suggested edit in place. I hit "improve" -- I already suspected I was going to cancel the improvement and reject the edit, but I wanted to at least see if looking at the whole thing made any sense of what the edit was trying to achieve.

Instead, I got a message asserting that I'd failed a test. Now the edit is marked
Review audit failed 6 mins ago:

I'm frustrated because I feel like I have this "fail" stamp now and I actually just wanted to see the edit in the context of the full post.

Am I penalized for this in some way? It seems unfair, since I didn't accept the edit.
